A 'Gateway' to sporting fun

The Rotary Club of Spalding and Welland staged its 24th annual Gateway Sports Day at the Castle Sports Complex in Spalding.

The event is for disabled competitors from Gateway Clubs and this year it was a fierce track and field contest between Spalding and Boston.

Many medals were won by the winners and runners-up of events which included the 100m walk, 4x 100m relay, wheelchair race, shot put and many more, all organised and judged on the day by Arthur Simmonds of Nene Valley Harriers, who support the event unstintingly year after year.

The day’s events were all kept in good-natured and always amusing order by Master of Ceremonies Richard Thacker whose experience from many previous years in entertainment make him an ideal man for the job

A great added attraction every year is also a huge buffet served midway through the event, provided every year by The Inner Wheel Club of Spalding, Rotary Wives and The Woodlands Hotel, and this year was an absolute banquet.

The day overall was won by the Boston Club and all medals and trophies were presented by President Fay Barrett, who is also the very first Lady President since the original Rotary Club of Spalding was founded in 1937.
