PICTURE SPECIAL: Fen Fatales of Holbeach branch of the Red Hat Society visit the Museum of Technology in Throckenholt

A party of women rediscovered their youth amongst a treasure trove of historic gadgets on display near Gedney Hill.

The Fen Fatales of Holbeach, a "chapter" (branch) of the Red Hat Society for women aged over 50 who meet regularly for outings and activities, paid a visit to the Museum of Technology in Throckenholt on Monday.

Military weapons and equipment, office machinery, information technology and telecommunications from 1850 to 1980 were at the mercy of the Fen Fatales who were served with tea, coffee and cakes by museum founders Trevor Cass and Rosie Hourihane.

"They all arrived en masse after the chairman had told them what to expect," Rosie said.

"The Fen Fatales were dressed from head to toe in red and mauve as they were laughing and reminiscing with us.

"It was magical and the place was buzzing as they had tea, coffee and cakes in our community room."

One of the Fen Fatales, Susan Lantz, wrote in the museum's visitors book: "It was absolutely riveting, a wonderful exhibition in a wonderful place and the hospitality was second to none."

The museum, opened by Rosie and Trevor in 2016, covers a period in which a technological revolution took place across the sectors of electronics, engineering, telegraphy, telephony, audio, military and civil communications, warfare, photography, scientific and electrical equipment.

Rosie said: "This is our third full season as a museum and ninety per cent of our visitors find us through the internet, social media or our own website.

"It's not a dead place, as people think of museums that are dusty and a bit boring, and our favourite thing is seeing people coming here, telling us stories and remembering things."
