Sutton Bridge pie and mash man introduces doorstep meals service
A Sutton Bridge businessman who brought the traditional London dish of pie and mash to the area has expanded his operation to meet the "corona crunch".
Nick Maguire, whose pie and mash restaurant in Long Sutton is currently closed due to government restrictions, is making the Cockney delicacy available to people on their doorstep.
As well as his own pie, mash and liquor dish, Nick is also offering chicken tikka and rice, beef bolognese pasta and tuna bake, with a cheese and onion pie alternative for vegetarians.
Nick said: "We launched our pop-up service to many towns around our local shop last September and things were going well.
"However, after taking a short break, we found ourselves at the beginning of what I call 'The Corona Crunch’.
"With the recent government advice to close pubs, cafes and restaurants, and with social distancing measures making takeaway queues risky in their own right, we took the decision to close our restaurant and pop-up service for the recommended period of at least three weeks.
"But knowing how many people were at home or socially isolated, whether with coronavirus symptoms or not, we hurried through plans for a new doorstep delivery ordering system so that people can order their pie and mash without any need to expose themselves to others."
The "meals on wheels" service is available to people living with a ten-mile radius of his Long Sutton restaurant, although "exceptions" can be made for larger orders from further afield.
Nick said: "For example, we are working with a few customers in Peterborough and Boston to make deliveries possible to those areas, with mutual cooperation between us and the customers.
"The feedback so far has been brilliant, with comments such as ‘very tasty piping hot food to our door for a really good price’ and ‘we always loved the shop but now we can have it at home - thanks for sorting this out so fast’.
"At the same time, we've decided that pie and mash might not be enough so we've added a few table favourites to our menu, such as chicken tikka and rice, chicken and mascarpone pasta, beef bolognese pasta and tuna bake.
"We've also increased our pie choices to include cheese and onion for vegetarians, chicken and mushroom for a different choice of pie and gluten-free pasta to help those with gluten intolerances as well."
Nick confirmed that more than 200 meals have been served since deliveries started a week ago.
"It’s humbling to be appreciated and supported in this way by old customers and new," Nick said.
"Therefore, we'll continue to support the community in this fashion until the crisis is over."
