Plans for Wendy’s and two other new units approved for Spalding’s Lincs Gateway Business Park

Plans for a new Wendy’s restaurant have been given the green light.

South Holland District Council has given permission to two single storey restaurant/cafe drive-thrus and another single storey restaurant/cafe at the Lincs Gateway Business Park, off the A1175 on the outskirts of Spalding.

One of the drive thru units will be taken by Wendy’s – an American burger chain that is expanding into the UK. Another could be taken by a coffee chain – but the identity has not yet been revealed.

Plans include 42 parking spaces – three for disabled users – and 14 cycle spaces.

An acre of land at the site - next to the new KFC and Taco Bell outlets that opened last year – was sold to Dukesmead Investments by Ashwood Homes to pave the way for the new stores.

Their proposed opening hours at 6am to 11pm, daily.

The plan did attract opposition from Spalding’s cycle action group Pedals, which was disappointed with the lack of safe access to the site by bicycle.

Ward member Coun David Ashby also responded to say: “Objection as entry to the site would increase and it’s a dangerous stretch of road for anyone walking or biking from Spalding or turning right into the site.

“The speed limit should be reduced to allow safer access for all, including bicycles.”

Officers ruled that the plan is acceptable – and notes that Lincolnshire County Council’s highways team does not object.

A report drafted up by planning team concluded: “It is considered that the proposed restaurants can be incorporated into the wider Lincolnshire Gateway Business Park site without materially impacting the amenity and character of the surrounding area, or delivery of the wider employment site.

“The buildings are considered to be appropriate to the locality in terms of design and would not materially harm the character/appearance of the area.

“The amenity of nearby residents would not be affected in terms of noise/disturbance taking into consideration existing traffic flow to/from the site. LCC Highways raises no objection on highway safety grounds.”

The site is already home to Applegreen services, Marstons, Greggs, Costa and Subway – as well as last year’s arrivals Taco Bell and KFC - and is also home to the Ashwood Homes headquarters.
