Plans go in for former garden machinery site

A former garden supplies store could be getting a new lease of life if planners give the green light.

Westons Garden Machinery site in Holbeach Road, Spalding, has stood empty for some time but could have a new future ahead if a new planning application gets the rubber stamp.

Mr K Ahmad has applied to South Holland District Council to change the use of the site from a gardening tools and plant shop to class E which could be used as a shop.

Supporting information submitted with the application states: “The current use of the property as a gardening tools and plants shop has served the local community well, contributing to the diversity of retail options in the area.

“However, market trends and consumer preferences have shifted, indicating a growing demand for different types of retail offerings.

“This proposal seeks to adapt to these changes while ensuring that the property continues to serve the community effectively.

“The proposed change to Class E (a) will enable the establishment of a retail operation that can sell a variety of goods, such as clothing, homeware, and lifestyle products, excluding hot food. This diversification is intended to cater to a broader customer base and enhance the shopping experience in the locality.”

The application states that the building has retained a lot of infrastructure needed to operate as a shop again and that there are no external alterations planned.

It also lists the benefits of the proposal to be increased retail diversity, attracting more visitors to the area and that it may also generate additional jobs.

The application goes onto state: “In summary, the proposed change of use for 48 Holbeach Road represents a proactive approach to responding to shifting market dynamics and community needs.

“By transitioning to a Class E (a) retail use, the property can continue to contribute positively to the local economy and enhance the shopping experience for residents.

“We believe that this proposal will not only meet the current demand for diverse retail options but also strengthen the vitality of the area, making it a more attractive destination for both residents and visitors.”
