Holbeach Parish Council unveils series of events to bring a buzz to to town

Councillors have unveiled a series of events over the next year to boost Holbeach town centre.

A calendar of events and plans to enhance areas of the town were discussed during Holbeach Parish Council’s first face-to-face meeting since the pandemic began.

Ideas, including painting a mural at Stukeley bus stop and putting on events such as car shows and yard sales, are all planned for the coming weeks and months.

Speaking during Tuesday’s meeting at The Reading Rooms, Coun Isobel Hutchinson updated councillors on the plans, which have been put forward by the parish council committees.

Speaking on plans by the Planning, Properties, Emergency Planning and Speeding Committee, she said: “There are two bus stops which are owned by the parish council; the one at Wignals Gate and the Stukeley one.

“We’ve already painted a mural at the bus stop on Wignals Gate shelter on the meridian line idea.

“We did originally have some art from the school in the Stukeley shelter but unfortunately this got pulled down, so we thought we would look at something more permanent which will brighten it up. We have the paint already so there will be no cost implication.”

Chairman Coun Stephen Johnson added: “It’s a bit of a no brainer. We don’t want to miss the opportunity so let’s grab it.”

The Events Committee has also been working on a calendar for the rest of the year.

The committee has met twice since it was formed to map out events which are smaller to accommodate Covid restrictions.

Committe chairman Coun Isobel Hutchinson said: “We have mapped out a programme of events for the rest of the year and have worked on ideas given to us via the Facebook page.

“Most people want to see things in the town centre, so we have organised a car show for July which looks like it is going to be a good success.

“We have something planned for each month up to Christmas, with a yard sale with food as a stop off in Carter’s Park, the food festival in September, window dressing and potentially pumpkins in the cemetery at Halloween, the Remembrance Parade in November and Christmas window competition in December.”

The Open Spaces Committee is also looking to install a disabled swing in Carter’s Park along with marking out a running track at Netherfields.
