Plans to transform former Spalding Barclays into BoyleSports betting shop

Plans to transform an empty former town centre bank have been submitted.

The property at 10 Hall Place in Spalding operated as a Barclays until the branch closed a year ago.

Now BoyleSports want to convert the ground floor into a betting office.

Spalding currently has four bookies in the town centre, two Ladbrokes, a BetFred and a William Hill, as well as a Merkur Slots casino.

However, the planning statement produced by agent Lichfields argued ‘the proposed development would not constitute a proliferation of betting offices within the town centre’.

BoyleSports say the plans would bring jobs and money to the area.

“This proposal, through the direct investment from BoyleSports (UK) Limited, would contribute to the economic growth of Spalding Town Centre,” the statement added.

“On average, £300,000 is invested by BoyleSports on the fitting out of each new unit and BoyleSports pays an average of £9,500 of business rates per unit, per annum, to the council.

“The proposal would create three full time and three part time jobs (including a part time cleaner).

“In addition, each new BoyleSports unit creates 26 temporary construction jobs over the six to eight week construction period. It also creates ongoing, indirect employment, through the supply chain for consumables, waste management and utilities.”

BoyleSports is a global brand which provides gambling and betting services including horse racing, football, tennis, golf, rugby, cricket, basketball and numbers betting.

It was founded in 1989 by John Boyle and has more than 300 shops in Ireland and the UK.
