Spalding family’s fight continues to bring Lisa Szymanowska home to the UK who is seriously ill in a Spanish hospital
The fight is on to bring a seriously ill schoolgirl stuck in a Spanish hospital back home to the UK - which could cost her family £27,000.
Spalding teenager Lisa Szymanowska is currently in Alicante General Hospital under intensive care due to swelling on the brain and her mum and older sister are desperate for her to fly back to a county hospital.
Lisa, a pupil at Spalding High School, lives in the town but holds a Polish passport — and neither the British or Polish embassies are able to help the family with their plight.
Older sister Alicia said: “It would mean everything for us to have Lisa get back home, to support my mum and be here together and not feel so isolated
“We have been feeling that nobody can really help us at the moment.
“She is trying to talk but needs to wait for everything to heal.”
Following a summer break to Spain, Lisa became unwell, lost consciousness and was diagnosed by Spanish doctors with encephalitis and placed in an induced coma.
However help has been offered by Sir John Hayes, South Holland and The Deepings MP, who is willing to talk directly to the Foreign Secretary about the case.
He said: “The key thing is to get her back and be treated here but it would need to be with clinical advice and safe for her to fly.
“My emotional response is to want to move her and get her home which is a natural thing but it has to be done safely.
“I am happy to intervene with the foreign office to bring about the steps to bring this young woman home.”
Lisa currently has a blood infection and after a course of anti-biotics it is hoped she will be moved in to the recovery unit and be well enough to travel.
The family have been told that it would £27,000 to bring Lisa home in her condition but this would drop to £5,000 if she is able to fly on a plane with a medical assistant after going into a recovery unit - which may not happen soon.
Alicia said: “We would be very happy if Sir John would help.
“That would be great.”
Although there are complexities surrounding Lisa coming home there has been progress with her health.
Alicia returned from Spain where she has been to give her mum a break from being by Lisa’s bedside 24/7.
She said: “Lisa is moving around which is good and is good progress.
“She is trying to talk but needs to wait for everything to heal from the tubes.
“We just need loads of time.”
The family started a Go Fund Me which has raised £13,799 to assist with costs.
