St Marys Church in Long Sutton is set to be illuminated this weekend

A special Christmas light display which has previously attracted more than four thousand people is set to return this weekend.

St Mary’s Church in Long Sutton will be illuminated tomorrow (Friday, 20) and Saturday, December 21 between 5pm and 9pm.

The annual event, which has previously seen thousands of people flock to see the spectacle, has already raised more than £1,000 to go towards the cost of future events during previous years.

Mel Tennant, one of the organisers said: “The event continues to grow bigger and bigger every year – last year we saw 4,000 people.

“All of the money raised, goes towards the committee who organise the event and work through the year to plan it all.

“It’s really popular and this year we will be asking people to write names of loved ones over the stars.

“Pupils from the local school have drawn pictures of Christmas trees and these will be lit up on the outside of the church. It will be really nice for them to spot their tree.”

On Friday, visitors can enjoy a silent disco, stilt walkers and fire dancers in the church. There will be music on Saturday with lots of other entertainment.

The event was created by Coun Andy Tennant, who funded it through his personal South Holland councillor budget, and hoped it would encourage the community to visit the church.

It is now run by a small committee group and relies on the support of sponsorships from businesses in the area and funding.

The target for this year’s event is £1,500.
