Teams from Gedney Drove End, Holbeach, Holbeach Bank, Holbeach St Marks, Long Sutton and Sutton Bridge enjoy Quicksticks fun

Quicksticks Hockey took centre stage in the latest round of the School Games programme, organised by Agilitas Sports.

Primary schools from the district were hosted at University Academy Long Sutton on Wednesday for a Lincolnshire South East School Sport Partnership competition.

A fast-paced version of hockey played by youngsters, Quicksticks sees teams of four play on smaller pitches with fewer rules than the adult game and there are quick rotations of players so lots of children get to play.

In all,14 teams took part from six schools: Holbeach Primary, Holbeach Bank, Long Sutton, Sutton Bridge Westmere, Gedney Drove End and Holbeach St Marks.

The day started with sports leaders from UALS taking teams and running them through warm ups, coaching and some practice games. Matches were then played throughout the day, with an emphasis on pupils having fun and improving their new skills.

Scores were kept so that teams could be seeded against similar strength opposition. This resulted in a final placing of Westmere A finishing first, Gedney Drove End A second and Long Sutton B third.

School Games is a legacy of the 2012 London Olympics and Rupert Gibson, of Agilitas, said: "All of the children did brilliantly, despite the wet weather. They were very well behaved and a credit to their schools. It was great to see how much they improved in such a short time, how well they played and how much fun they had."

He thanked the 15 sports leaders from University Academy Long Sutton Academy who had prepared over the previous week and did a good job coaching and officiating.

Pupils wanting to play more hockey are very welcome at Long Sutton Hockey Club on a Saturday morning from 9am-10.30am. The first session is free, after which they pay just £3 per session and all equipment can be provided.
