Management at Wetherspoon’s Ivy Wall pub in Spalding listen to feedback and review decision to move tribute plaque
Managers at a town pub have listened to feedback from customers and reversed their decision to move a plaque in honour of a popular patron.
Angus McPherson regularly attended an informal support group - now called Wind Back Wednesday - at Wetherspoon’s Ivy Wall pub in Spalding before his death last year - and a plaque to honour him was installed close to where he sat.
However, the gold plaque was moved by pub management to a different spot behind the bar - which upset customers and friends who had raised funds for it.
After management conducted a review as promised, a spokesperson for JD Wetherspoon said: “We had moved the plaque because we’ve had a new carpet fitted very recently so the beneath your feet art work has gone alongside the art work for the bar rack.
“The plaque was actually linked with the clock so the team had it moved to near another clock in the pub, on the bar but on view.
“We have given the customers a couple of choices and they’ve agreed one with us to suit all parties and everyone seems happy.”
The support group has become a lifeline and grown in number since it was started a decade ago by Coun Mark Le Sage.
He said: “I am very pleased that the senior management has reviewed their initial insensitive position to remove the plaque without any consultation.
“The Ivy Wall is only a building until it is filled with staff and customers - some of which are sadly those no longer with us.
“We are all grateful that the plaque will be put up in memory of our dear friend Angus McPherson.”
The next Wind Back Wednesday session will take place tomorrow (Wednesday January 22) from 9am-11am and will have representatives from mental health organisations with information and support on offer.
