Spalding pub's swan song and sale of the century

Die-hard Punchbowl pub fans are ready for a marathon session on Sunday through to 3am on Monday before their favourite Spalding watering hole closes.

There will be live music on Sunday with Lincs Battle of the Bands winners DB Jones doing sets at 2.30pm and 7pm and a succession of musicians jamming on stage between those times.

Landlord Pete Williams will be DJ for the final hours and customers are naming their choice for the last ever song, with contenders including The Final Countdown, Don't Look Back in Anger and Chasing Cars.

The Punchbowl opens once more from 11am-3pm on Saturday, February 22 for the sale of the century, when fixtures and fittings ranging from pool tables to the pizza oven, and drinking glasses to guitars, will be snapped up by people keen to buy souvenirs to remind them of happy days at the pub.

The Williams family - Pete and wife Steph and their son Ben - are quitting the New Road pub after 22 years, having revealed in January 2018 they were ready to pull their last pints.

Pete says Sunday will be "a nice, relaxed but absolutely chaotic day".

He said: "We are licensed to 3 in the morning (Monday) and a lot of people have told us they've booked Monday off work - and one business held a lottery to see who would get the day off because so many of their staff wanted it."

Pete's daughter-in-law Laura has organised the sale although he will be there on the day to supervise as items including Budweiser neon signs, around eight guitars and three pool tables are sold.

Pete says the pool tables can be dismantled and delivered.

Some things will be priced and he says everything must go because the brewery wants to take back "an empty shell".
