The Chequers of Weston conquers Mount Snowdon for British Heart Foundation
A 16-strong team from The Chequers of Weston pub has conquered Mount Snowdon, raising more than £4,200 for charity along the way.
The group led by pub owner Katie Booth climbed the mountain, which at 1,085m (3,560ft) above sea level is the tallest in Wales, in aid of the British Heart Foundation (BHF).
It took the group, which ranges in age from 15 years old up to 60, between two and four hours to complete the feat, with the main group averaging around three hours to make the summit.
“It was amazing,” said Katie, who took over the High Road pub in 2018, “very hot, but amazing! We all helped and supported each other along the way. I’m really proud of everyone for getting involved and doing it.
“A couple more members of staff and family met us at the top after coming up on the train. It was such a clear, hot day – we could see for miles. The climb was challenging, due to the heat and it was very steep in places, but we all survived!”
Katie came up with the idea for the charity climb after visiting Wales last year when she made the journey three-quarters of the way up to Snowdon’s peak via its mountain railway.
She said the pub team decided to support the BHF as many of them know people who have suffered or been affected by heart conditions and were keen to encourage everyone to look after their heart.
The group has spent the past four months preparing for its epic endeavour, which they completed on September 4.
As well as collecting sponsorship money the pub also hosted a fundraising quiz night earlier in the year and donated a percentage of the ticket money taken at recent barbecue to the cause.
“I’m really proud of the whole team – we all had our moments, but everyone came together. We’ve raised an amazing amount of money and the donations are still coming in. Our customers have really gotten behind us, which is wonderful.
“We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported us.”
