South Holland District Council reveals public toilet work for Long Sutton, Spalding and Donington

Council bosses have begun a programme of repairs for South Holland's public toilets.

The work has started with the facilities in West Street in Long Sutton - where a two-to-three week refurbishment programme is under way with the aim of 'repairing, cleaning and refreshing the facilities'.

When this is done, the focus will move on to the toilets in Spalding's Winfrey Avenue.

This work is due to begin on January 31 and will take three-to-four weeks and will involve an 'extensive repair' and 'deep clean'.

That will then be followed by the refurbishment of the public toilets in Park Lane, Donington in February.

This could take four to six weeks and will include structural repair work to allow the ladies to reopen.

The council says that options are currently being explored for work on the facilities in Sheep Market and Ayscoughfee Gardens in Spalding, with work on Holbeach public toilets due as part of its town improvement plan.

The authority has promised more information on plans for these facilities in the coming weeks.

A council statement explained: "Residents and businesses across the district have regularly fed back that access to clean and working public toilet facilities is an important factor for those considering visiting our town centres and markets, with the council prioritising the work as part of their continued improvement plans to help encourage shoppers back following the pandemic.

"The work is being partially funded through the council's town centre improvement fund, as well as Welcome Back Funding through the European Regional Development Fund."

Councillor Rodney Grocock, portfolio holder for planning and assets, said: "The condition of our public toilets in South Holland has been a big point of discussion for several years now, and I am delighted that we are now in a position to take these positive, pro-active steps to improve and refresh these facilities for shoppers and visitors.

"We want the experience of visiting our towns to be enjoyable, attractive and convenient, and we know that completing this work is a key part of that ambition.

"Collectively we need to take responsibility to keep our towns and facilities clean and safe, for the benefit of everyone who uses them."
