Long Sutton and District Civic Society looks to recreate two photographs from 1950s to celebrate Queen's Platinum Jubilee

Old friends could be reunited if a Platinum Jubilee plan comes together.

Wendy Jeffries (74), vice chair of Long Sutton and District Civic Society, hopes to recreate two photographs taken 70 years ago when the Queen was first inaugurated.

The pictures feature Long Sutton Primary School youngsters of the day, who planted two trees to celebrate Elizabeth II taking the crown.

A few of them still live in the town and will be joining hands once more to mark the anniversary - and Wendy has issued a plea for anyone else involved at the time get in touch.

“We thought it would be nice if we could get a few to recreate it and see how they’ve grown - and not only the trees,” she said.

The two 1953 photographs have been showcased at Jubilee exhibitions in Long Sutton Market House over the years.

Wendy says they helped to mark the likes of the Silver, Golden and Diamond occasions - and hopes a modern recreation could make for a special event this summer.

“It would be lovely. Between us, we might be able to contact a few people,” she said.

“We know people are going to be 75 and over, because we all are. We were only 5.

“You’ve got to think yourself fortunate that you’ve lived to 75. You’ve had the pleasure of reaching this age.”

The Civic Society plans to take the new photographs on Saturday, May 21 at around 11am.

The group hopes to use the picture alongside the originals in a Jubilee exhibition in the Market House, which will be held over June 4-5.

This would join several other events which have been planned by the town’s parish council.

On June 5, a fete, old-fashioned fair rides, a dog show and tractors will come to town for the big day.

Music and ice cream from Laddies will also be on offer, while the Royal British Legion will be serving tea and cakes.

A car boot sale is also planned. Anyone who wishes to have a stall at the fete can email longsuttonpclincs@gmail.com
