Residents concerned about fly tipping and refuse dumping on Spalding street

Concerns have been raised about fly tipping and refuse dumping in a town street.

Items including a wardrobe, plastic chair and bed have been discarded on an area of grassland on Spalding’s Sough Avenue, which connects Ayscough Avenue with Crocus Walk.

The area of land is regularly used by residents to leave their refuse the night before or morning of collection day.

However, bags have been piling up on non-collection days, creating an eyesore and potential health hazard which could attract vermin.

This has especially been the case over the busy Christmas period, which included changes to collection timetables and more rubbish than usual accumulated by many households.

It has also been suggested that people who live on nearby streets use the site to get rid of unwanted bin bags they should be storing on their own properties.

“I think because it’s Christmas not everybody knows what day it (collection) is, they just leave their rubbish here,” one resident said.

“I think maybe other people who don’t live here use it as well as a place to put their rubbish.

“One person who used to live here, when they were moving out, they just left a bed there."

The resident suggested erecting a storage unit to house the unsightly bin bags.

The rise on refuse on the site was brought to our attention by one regular visitor to the area who says the dumping has been going on for more than a year, providing us with photos that show large objects including furniture being fly tipped.

The land even has a sign on it which reads ‘NO FLY TIPPING OR DUMPING’, and warning that anyone doing so could face fines of up to £50,000.

Last month South Holland District Council announced it was preparing to crack down on fly tipping after cases trebled over a five-year period.

A council spokesperson said: “Whilst we appreciate that we are currently in a disrupted period of collections due to the Christmas break, the early presentation of refuse and recycling bags by a minority of residents is never acceptable.

“Leaving bags out days before they are due to be collected can often encourage others residents to do so, and even lead to larger fly-tips that can severely impact the look and feel of the surrounding area.

“We all have a collective responsibility to keep our towns, villages and countryside clean and safe, and we would encourage any residents witnessing early presentation to report these problems directly to us, so that they can be investigated and further action can be taken where appropriate.”
