Nearby residents 'overjoyed' by Spalding 5G mast rejection
Nearby residents say they were delighted by the decision to reject plans for both 5G masts in Spalding.
Mark Street, whose property would have been second closest to the Wygate Park mast, said he was “overjoyed” by the decision.
He said: “It’s a good result – the best outcome we could hope for. Hopefully they won’t appeal and hopefully that’s the end of the matter.
“I am not against 5G but I don’t think anybody would want something like that near their house.”
He asked critics to think how they would feel if it was 25 metres from their house – as it would’ve been for his home and added: “I am very happy with my 4G phone, it works perfectly well. Personally I think areas where you can’t get 4G will need one first.”
Mr Street, who followed South Holland District Council’s planning committee meeting online on Wednesday night, backed calls from councillors to consider the masts in industrial areas or by the new relief road.
He added: “If houses are then built after the mast then people have got the choice.”
Resident Mary Mann, who lives near the Birch Grove mast site, said it would not have been fair to approve that structure and reject the one in Wygate Park – as proposed by council officers.
She said her neighbours were pleased with the result and added: “It was a great sense of relief.
“It does show that individual voices do matter and that’s good. That’s democracy isn’t it?”
When the news broke on Wednesday night, some readers took to Facebook to criticise the council for getting in the way of new technology.
Tom Chamberlain wrote: “And people wonder why Spalding is stuck in the past! If you’re not willing to move with the times they will move without you.”
