Spalding Sheep Market toilets are set to re-open in spring 2024

A block of town centre toilets are set to finally re-open next year following a massive renovation project.

Sheep Market toilets in Spalding are now surrounded by security fencing as contractors start work to create modern and accessible Changing Places facilities.

The block, which has been closed for sometime, is being given a make-over as part of a £150,000 project using Government cash to provide more facilities for people with limited mobility, or specific disabilities and care needs.

Assets and strategic planning portfolio holder Coun Henry Bingham told the last Spalding Town Forum meeting that walking to use Sainsbury’s toilets in Holland Market is a big bug bear for people.

He said: “Changing Place toilets will be a massive asset to the town.

“Work has now begun. We are looking for full delivery in spring next year but can’t guarantee the date.”

He said that council workers will be using the site for storage.

Coun Bingham said: “Facilities are being done in a way to limit vandalism. I would like to say that it would be completely vandal proof but we have taken into consideration the possibility of vandalism and are doing what we can. If we do have issues it will be easily or quickly repaired.

“I have really pushed for this and the officers have worked hard to deliver.”

The project will include three new toilet facilities, a baby changing room and the introduction of a Changing Places facility designed for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.

Spalding St Mary’s councillor Mark Le Sage thanked the team and hopes Sheep Market will be open in May ready for the Tulip Parade and Spalding Music and Beer Festival.

Coun Ingrid Sheard questioned about the opening times of the revamped toilets and if there will be any funding left over to cover any repairs if there is vandalism.

Coun Bingham told her that repairs will come from a general fund.
