Deeping St Nicholas farmer Nicholas Watts, of Vine House Farm, says rising cost of imported food is good for British agriculture
Our regular columnist Nicholas Watts looks at the impact of rising fuel costs on agriculture
Farming is much the same as politics, you never know what is round the corner.
Oil and the strength of the pound can be friend or foe to us farmers.
If the price of oil goes up everything else goes up in value as some of our combinable crops get made into fuel.
If the value of the pound goes up, oil prices come down and the price of imported food goes down which is not good news for farmers.
I can’t think of the last British politician who put a smile on farmers’ faces but President Putin certainly has, but of course these are now worrying times with the threat of nuclear bombs being banded about.
One wonders whether our politicians have any idea on how to run the country and as most of them go straight into politics when leaving school instead of getting a proper job.
They have very little know how of running a business let alone on how to run the country.
Liz Truss said she was going to reduce taxes, Rishi Sunak who is a business man had a more business grip of our country but the Conservative Party voted for the crazy way to run the country.
Liz Truss has not muted that she wanted to do anything for farmers but as the value of the pound goes down it will put the price of imported food up which must be good for farmers.
