Spalding's Roman Catholic church to reopen its doors for individual prayer

St Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church in Spalding is to reopen from tomorrow (Thursday) for private prayer, it has been confirmed.

Permission for the church, in St Thomas's Road, to open again after three months of lockdown was granted on Monday, meaning that St Norbert's is available to anyone wishing to pray there from 11am until noon on June 25.

St Norbert’s will also be open for private prayer on Tuesdays from 7pm until 8pm and Sundays from 3pm until 4pm.

Parish priest Father Jim Burke said: "St. Norbert’s is quite a large community and the church complex is also fairly extensive so there was a considerable amount of work to be done to obtain the required permissions.

"The church is my family and, in a way, we exist for each other so that without each other we cannot exist.

"The fact that we stream all our services live over the internet does help and those who join me regularly for services are great at keeping in touch.

"Sometimes I receive as many as 70 text messages or emails after the Sunday Masses and we have had as many as 197 homes joining us from all parts of the UK, as well as the USA, Canada, Australia, Italy, India and Ireland."

St Norbert's had to follow strict guidelines laid down by the Catholic Bishops Conference in England and Wales, in consultation with the Government and other church leaders, in order to reopen for private prayer and funeral services only.

Father Jim said: "We can now conduct non-Eucharistic funeral services at St Norbert’s which will bring great comfort to many people."

Meanwhile, it is hoped that Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, in Foxes Low Road, Holbeach, will also be able to reopen shortly.

Father Jim, also parish priest for Holy Trinity, said: "We are now concentrating on submitting an application to allow our church in Holbeach to reopen and I am hoping that will happen very soon."
