Pledge by Spalding's Sainsbury's to clean up after disposable gloves found littering the area near its filling station

Bosses at Sainsbury’s in Spalding have promised to take action after scores of disposable gloves, believed to have come from its petrol station, were found littering the area.

Green Party candidate for Spalding’s Castle ward, Alistair Crisp, said he and his team picked up “well over a hundred” of the blue, one-use gloves. They had become entangled in the hedgerows near the filling station at Holland Market.

He said: “These were becoming a hazard to local wildlife and creating an eyesore for residents and visitors using the nearby train station.

“After bagging the plastic fuel gloves, I decided it was time to speak truth to power and return to Sainsbury’s management their lost property, requesting the gloves be disposed of responsibly and for a meeting to be arranged to find a proactive solution to the concern.”

However, he said that the member of staff he spoke to, at first said the gloves had not come from Sainsbury’s. He left his details, and after waiting three weeks, he tweeted the supermarket on Sunday. They then got in touch to arrange a meeting.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s told us: “We offer disposable gloves at our petrol filling stations for safety reasons and these are popular with our customers.

“Unfortunately some were blown away during recent extreme weather. We’re making sure the area is kept clear and they’re stored more securely in future.”

Alistair and his team are also running ‘the Spalding Green Clean’ every second Saturday, targetting litter hotspots in the town. He is also in talks with Network Rail regarding clearing up littering at disused land adjacent to the Winsover Road crossing and under Stepping Stones Bridge.
