South Holland District Council chairman Coun Andrew Woolf organises Santa Fun Run around Spalding in aid of Blood Cancer UK and Mencap

A merry band of festive runners braved Storm Darragh on Sunday to fundraise for two charities - and were given an impromptu guard of honour.

Coun Andrew Woolf, chairman of South Holland District Council, led this year’s Santa Run through Spalding from the Castle Sports swimming pool in aid of Spalding Mencap and Blood Cancer UK.

The group included elves, Spalding Flower Parade Queen Becs Roberts, Coun Ingrid Sheard and runners from the Halmer Harriers gathering at the starting blocks where members of Spalding Squadron 1406 formed a line as they set off on their 5k seasonal dash.

Coun Woolf said: ““There was a nice turn out and for most of the run it didn’t rain and despite the weather it didn’t put us off.

“There were so many cadets to help out that they provided an impromptu guard of honour.

“We raised a few hundred pounds which is a little bit more towards the charities.”

Dressed in Santa hats and costumes the energetic bunch weaved their way down Pinchbeck Road, West Elloe Avenue, Albion Street and along the river completing their route at the swimming pool car park.

Coun Woolf said: “I am extremely grateful to Crusader Traffic Management who helped to make it safe to cross the roads.

“Thank you also to South Lincs Security who provided first aiders and luckily there no injuries.
