More sign up to tackle speeding drivers in scheme that could see the public with speed guns

At least 12 areas are now expected to take part in South Holland’s Community Speedwatch scheme - in the bid to stop speeding drivers.

Among those are Pinchbeck, Moulton Chapel and Moulton Seas End, Deeping St Nicholas, Cowbit and Peak Hill, Sutton St James, Sutterton, Sutton Bridge and Monks House Lane and Cradge Bank in Spalding.

That is according to Jan Whitbourn, area police volunteer co-ordinator for the scheme in South Holland.

And after an appeal for volunteers in the Spalding Guardian last month, it will now also include Gosberton where a driver was recorded going 101mph in a 30mph limit in June.

Parish councillor Rowland Perry said: “We now have 12 volunteers. I’ve just downloaded the data from the new speed indicator sign in the village and it recorded one person going at 101mph.

“There have been recordings of people going above 60 (mph) and several in the 80s and 90s.

“I’ve sent the data to Spalding police. The new sign is great because it can record speeds from both directions.”

The Speedwatch scheme is managed by Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership. It will see small teams of volunteers conducting high-visibility roadside checks in 20mph, 30mph and 40mph areas and could see volunteers armed with speed guns.

Coun Whitbourn, who stresses that her role as volunteer area coordinator is separate to her position as a district councillor (for Holbeach St Johns), said: “We will be having a training meeting in Spalding, scheduled for next month (August) and I will be contacting everyone to come along. We will be discussing equipment and what will best benefit their area.

“People are saying some want to do it in other areas or villages away from where they live. I understand that and yes they can.”

A website called www.communityspeedwatch.org is not connected to the local scheme so people should not use that to register.
