Spalding Grammar School will reopen tomorrow but has warned that a new heating system will be required in parts of the building

A school will be welcoming students back tomorrow after it was forced to shut today for a maintenance issue.

Spalding Grammar School was closed today (Tuesday, October 29) after significant damage was caused over the weekend by a leaking water tank.

Executive headteacher Michele Anderson, who took over from outgoing head Steven Wilkinson in the autumn, has contacted parents to say the water has been cleared but warned that a new heating system is going to be required in some areas.

In a letter to parents Mrs Anderson said: “The loss of one of the school's main heating water tanks has impacted upon the heating system in several rooms. We are working with our contractors to secure temporary heaters, but this is likely to take a few days given that we must use a particular type and cannot just install small domestic units.

“We are planning the installation of the temporary heaters as soon as they are available and are also anticipating room changes if the temperatures drop too low in particular rooms.

“As a result of irreparable damage to the tank, we must install a completely new heating system in the area affected. Clearly, we cannot wait until the school is next closed at Christmas and will put further measures in place for the heating contractors to complete this work over the next few weeks.

“We will work with our contractors to minimise the potential disruption this will cause but may, and only if unavoidable, need to return to remote learning to complete this work safely.

“This will be as a last resort, and we will write to you to confirm dates and details should it be necessary to do so, including provision for key worker and vulnerable children.

“I appreciate that this situation will present challenges and changes to our daily routines but know that we will all rise to this positively to ensure that teaching and learning can continue to take place effectively.”
