South Holland District Council leader Nick Worth calls for people to look at the potential benefits of a Greater Lincolnshire devolution deal

The leader of South Holland District Council is calling on people to look at the bigger picture and see what devolution can bring to the county.

Coun Nick Worth is backing the devolution deal which was announced by the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt in last week’s autumn statement – which aims to bring a mayor along with a £24million of additional funding for the next three decades.

He also said that while the district councils will not have voting powers, they will have a role to play with scrutiny committees and four will be non-constituent members of the combined authority.

Coun Worth said the authority could bring improvements for the county’s infrastructure – including broadband.

He said: “We have got to look at what we can achieve for Greater Lincolnshire.

“The road infrastructure is one thing the authority can do. Any investment to improve the road networks is really good for us. There will be investment in skills and transport.

“Broadband connections are dire in some rural areas and anything we can do to improve that is a good thing.

“If we weren’t in this deal, we wouldn’t be getting that.”

Former district leader Lord Gary Porter is also supporting the deal.

Via social media, Lord Porter congratulated the county council for: “The work to get to a devolution bid that will reunite the ceremonial county of Lincolnshire. Short term the bid may not be as good as original offered (in 2016), but in the medium/ long term it will ensure that our people will not be left behind.”
