Spalding man accuses SHDC of ripping off residents and Sutton St James reader slams Government's response to Ukraine in this week's letters

They’re making money out of public again

On Tuesday we had a new washing machine delivered, and we put the old one on the front, with the intention of using the South Holland District Council’s large item pick-up service.

We also had an old steel barbecue which needed to go. We booked the service online and they deducted £25 from our account.

However, they gave us a pick-up date of the Tuesday, March 29, over two weeks away.

The following morning, a charity van called and asked if they could take away the items, at no cost, something to which we obviously happily agreed.

We immediately informed the council that we no longer required the pick-up, but they referred us to the website which states (in pretty small writing), that any money paid is non-refundable.

I was astounded, given that they had two weeks’ notice before the event. I requested that they investigate and come back to me, and they did in fact ring back and confirm that they would not return any money.

I have to question why they feel the need to keep our money, when they will have been put to no inconvenience, and been given plenty of notice. It seems to me that this is just another example of the council making money off the backs of the Spalding public.

Government response a disgrace

The response to the plight of Ukrainian refugees by this Government has been an absolute disgrace.

Passed from pillar to post and often country to country in search of the necessary paperwork, forced to fill in a 50 page visa document for ‘security reasons’.

What security checks were carried out on the 28,000 who crossed the Channel last year with no documents?

I’m guessing it’s a figure between nil and zero. Thankfully, the British public have risen magnificently to the challenge in spite of, not because of, the Government.

Pledge to raise £1,000 for us

In the UK, 1,000 people die from breast cancer every month.

Most of those deaths are from secondary breast cancer, which occurs when breast cancer cells spread from the first (primary) cancer in the breast to other parts of the body.

Secondary breast cancer can be treated but not cured, so we urgently need to do more for people affected by this incurable disease.

Breast Cancer Now is calling on readers to pledge to raise £1,000 by December 31 – from bake sales, to getting sponsored to walk or run.

Help us create a future where people with secondary breast cancer get more precious moments with the people they love, and to do the things they love – sign up to our £1,000 Challenge today at breastcancernow.org/1000_challenge
