The Deepings School gets mixed news from Ofsted

There's mixed news for The Deepings School in its latest Ofsted report as two categories leap from "requires improvement" to "good".

The quality of education and leadership and management are given the higher grade, but the education inspectorate lists three areas as "requires improvement" - behaviour and attitudes, personal development and sixth form provision.

The school's overall effectiveness is judged "requires improvement", just as it was in 2017 when all five areas examined were judged "requires improvement".

Head teacher Richard Lord said the school is delighted about the areas graded "good" and that "the ambition of staff for our students has been recognised".

He said: "We are, therefore, very heartened by the comments of the inspection team who have recognised the strides that we continue to make as a school.

"Clearly, we are disappointed that the overall judgement has not improved and recognise that there is still work to do.

"However, we are all fully committed to enhancing the learning experience of all our students.

"I would like to emphasise that our staff at the Deepings School have worked tirelessly to secure the improved judgements from the inspection team, frequently going the extra mile to support our learners.

"Of course, we will take a great amount of pride from the positive comments cited but also continue to address any areas for improvement highlighted in the report.

"We would like to thank those parents and carers who contacted the school both before and during the inspection to share their kind words and positive feedback about their experience of the Deepings School. Similarly, I would also like to thank our students, parents, staff, governors and the wider Deepings community for the way in which they have embraced the many changes that have been implemented since the previous inspection."

Ofsted say "pupils at this school receive a good quality of education" and "leaders and teachers are ambitious for all pupils".

Points for improvement include the need to address pupil attendance and the low-level disruptive behaviour of some pupils, which impedes the learning of others.

Ofsted also say: "The rate of fixed-term exclusions for poor behaviour is too high."
