Sutton Bridge Warblers singing group taking place at the Curlew Centre

A singing group is gathering pace and hopes to reach a crescendo by attracting more members.

The Sutton Bridge Warblers meet at the Curlew Centre every Monday from 7.30pm-9.30pm for a fun and friendly singalong.

Approaching its fifth week, the group has some 30 people getting together in a friendly environment to warble - while accompanied by piano, guitar and ukulele.

Peter Lawrence, organiser, said: “Everyone is welcome and it is totally for fun.

“The age group is fifty plus and we sing songs from the 60s and 70s.

“We are trying to make it so there is something for everybody.”

The group was originally started in Gedney Drove End by John and Ruth Coyle but struggled for members.

Mr Lawrence said: “We thought we would either have to pack up or move.

“So we decided to make it a new venture for Sutton Bridge.

“I have had quite a few people contact me who said they cannot sing - it doesn't matter.”

Singers are welcome of all ages and musical ability.

Mr Lawrence said: “Our piano player is 80 years old.

“We are not trying to be a choir

“We just enjoy ourselves and have a laugh.”

The group is a great opportunity to get out and socialise.

Mr Lawrence, who plays bass guitar and ukulele, said: “It is so easy to sit in, especially if you are single.

“This allows people to come out without having to go down to the pub.

“People have made new friends and there are two or three ladies who come along together.”

Some members of the group have performed at Holbeach Hurn Village Hall open mic night.

Mr Lawrence said: “The open mic nights are brilliant.

“A group of us are going to Holbeach Hurn fete on Sunday, July 13 to sing there.”

Coun Sue McLaughlin is a founder of HATS - Holbeach Amateur Theatrical Society - and is an avid supporter of the arts.

She said: “This area can be so isolating and it encourages people to socialise.

“There is a feeling of wellbeing after singing - we all feel great after dancing and singing.

“We are open to people with all abilities.”

Visit Sutton Bridge Warblers on Facebook for further details.

The next session is Monday, June 30 and a cost of £4 includes song sheets and refreshments.
