Holbeach St Johns: Wings & Wheels drew the crowds to Fenland airfield
While a strong, gusty wind, with predicted rain, prevented many aircraft from flying in to Fenland airfield this weekend, it did not stop more earth-bound visitors from gathering at the Holbeach St John’s airfield for its annual Wings & Wheels open day on Sunday.
More than 1,000 visitors were able to wander around the 50 trade stands and marvel at the collection of superbly turned-out vintage and classic motor cars, motorcycles and light aeroplanes.
Entertainment was provided by the Spalding Ukulele Band and, with the clubhouse restaurant doing a roaring trade, plus a variety of food stalls in the hangar and outside, the event catered for every taste.
The flying programme was curtailed by the strength of the wind, but there was a spirited display by a star of the forthcoming Batman movie, the Beech 18, G-BKGL, which had flown over from Leicester.
A Vans 8, G-RVEI, also helped boost the air interest for the crowd.
Sadly the whole event was brought to an abrupt halt at 2pm by a torrential downpour that sent the crowd running for cover and home but the earlier sunshine was sufficient to make the day a great success for visitors and organisers alike.
Money was raised on the day for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.
