‘Spalding Flower Parade got the crowd dancing and I loved the energy’ says reporter Bridie Short

A reassuring sound of drums notified us the well anticipated parade was on its way – but was it worth the wait? Here’s how reporter Bridie Short found this year’s event different…

Walking up to Springfields Outlet in Spalding, I had no idea what to expect.

The sun was shining and families were setting up – but the looming question going round in my head was, will it be as good as last year?

I decided to watch The Spalding Flower Parade from Roman Bank, after previously seeing it from West Elloe Avenue in 2024.

As the crowds grew bigger and the excitement was setting in, I really hoped everything went smoothly for the volunteers who had tirelessly spent their free time and energy putting this parade on for a third year.

My partner and I found a nice spot next to a friendly couple who had woken up at 5am to catch their coach at 6.30am.

The duo from Suffolk hadn’t seen the parade for more then ten years and were looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere once again.

An unfortunate delay meant the floats set off 30 minutes later than anticipated – but the crowd soon cheered and eagerly got into position.

The marching band followed by the ‘past flower queens’ brought smiles to everyone’s faces – it was go time!

My favourite part of the musicals themed parade was the Greatest Showman float as I liked how colourful it was and the elephant was also very eye-catching.

The floats which included music got the crowd dancing and singing along and the Nigerian community of Spalding brought the energy – which I loved.

It would have been nice to see more people on the floats rather than mannequins and also a bit more variety.

All in all, I enjoyed the nice weather and seeing the community get together to support it.

There wasn’t really a ‘wow factor’ for me this year and I feel like other families in the crowd thought the same – it was a bit of a surprise to see it end so quickly.

Walking back home, I overheard someone say ‘that was a bit anti-climactic wasn't it’.

It would be nice to see the flower parade receive the investment and support from higher authorities I think it needs, so it can continue to attract visitors from across the UK and boost our footfall.
