Spalding Flower Parade relic unearthed for new event

A relic from the last Spalding Flower Parade has been unearthed in the hope that it could be used at the revived event.

During a public meeting to discuss the plans for a new Spalding Flower Parade, the committee and audience were told that the former Flower Queen throne was still intact.

Deeping St Nicholas farmer Chris Carter revealed that he had been storing the throne for at least a decade and he hopes it will be used during next year’s event.

Speaking to the Spalding Guardian after the meeting, he said: “It wants to be used again - I never thought it would be needed again. I don’t remember the last time it was used but it’s just been wrapped up and left here really.

“It’s a piece of local heritage but it’s not mine - I’m just a custodian.”

Mr Carter says he feels the parade should focus on or feature other aspects of our history and our current roles within the food industry.

“It’s going to be a great thing for Spalding and I hope it will banish some of the negativity because it’s not a bad town,” he said.

“It’s really important that we celebrate food processing and making - 35% of the country’s food production touches Spalding which is just incredible. Roll on May 6.”

Stephen Timewell, the campaigner who kickstarted the plans for the new event, has updated the coveted Flower Queen role to fit in with modern times and hopes to use the throne on the day.

The new format will see two roles created - a Spalding Ambassador and their assistant - who will be selected by a judging panel. The roles are gender neutral, meaning anyone is welcome to take part.

Jan Whitbourn has been working with Mr Timewell to ensure there is plenty to entice people into taking up the new roles, which will involve a year of representing South Holland at a number of events.

Jan said: “I’ve been speaking to businesses to ask them if they would like to contribute to the package we put together for the Spalding Ambassadors and already we have had some amazing things given to us.

“There are so many people who are eager to make this a worthwhile thing.

“Whoever takes the role will be in it for a year and I’m already looking at the events they will be attending after they have become the Ambassador.

“So, I want to hear from everyone who is going to their prom this year.

“They’ve got the dresses ready so we want them to get involved!”

To contribute towards the packages, please contact Jan by emailing jan@tulip-events.co.uk or by calling 07779 895388.
