A trio of Flower and Tulip Queens cut the ribbon to open a new £4million lodge and restaurant in Spalding.

The Tulip Queen, part of the Lincs Gateway Business Park, welcomed the first customers through its doors yesterday after a six-month building programme on the outskirts of Spalding.

Janet Bray, Tulip Queen in 1958, Inca Honnor, the last-ever Flower Queen in 2013, and Tulip Queen of 2014, Amy Cook, were all invited to open the new complex off the B1173 Cowbit Road, Spalding.

Featuring a pub/restaurant capable of seating 180 people, The Tulip Queen also offers accommodation at a 38-bedroom lodge complex next to the main site.

The lodge and restaurant, run by Wolverhampton-based brewery Marston's, has created 60 new jobs which include front-of-house staff, chefs, housekeepers and a night porter.

Manager Gary Stevenson said: "I visited every other Marston's site round the country waiting for this big day and now we just want serve some real customers.

"Marston's lets its managers run their sites the way they want to and we want to show that The Tulip Queen identifies with its community,

"We'll be big on charities and we've some ideas of how to do that because charities will always be welcome here.

"We truly believe that The Tulip Queen will be a great addition to Spalding and we want to be at the heart of the community."

The Tulip Queen lodge is built on two floors, with double, twin and family rooms to accommodate four people, along with disabled and wheelchair access.

The pub also has a carvery, with meals served from 11.30am until 9pm, cake, ice cream and soft drinks counters, an interactive zone for children and outdoor play area.

Jamie Baxter, a former Sir John Gleed School student who is now The Tulip Queen's deputy manager, said: "I'm a local lad so this is just like coming home for me.

"I've been with Marston's for about eight years, doing a lot of intensive training with the company in Birmingham and Scotland.

"But because I know the Spalding area, we want to make sure that everybody feels involved and so we'll be raising money for local charities."
