Nine months of hard work in the gym and healthy eating have seen a Spalding woman shed a mighty 73 lbs ... and sign up for her first half-marathon.

Heather Walker (33)will walk and run the Great Eastern Run on October 14.

She will be there with staff from Everybody’s Gym who have been by her side every step of the way on her weight loss journey.

Heather joined the Spalding gym last November but says she got “properly started” in January.

“I’d had enough of being this weight,” said Heather. “I was on anti-depressants as well.”

Heather went cold-turkey by stopping the anti-depressants, although she doesn’t recommend anyone else to do that, and focused on her fitness and health.

One of her goals is boost her weight loss total to six stones by Christmas, and next year she aims to add a Tough Mudder and The Colour Run to her achievements.

In the meantime, Heather aims to begin training to become a Level 2 Fitness Instructor and then move on to the Level 3 so she can help post-natal women.

It was having a personal trainer by her side, in this case Guy Woods from Everybody’s Gym, and support from the gym boss, Adam Jones, that made all the difference.

Heather says you still have to put in the hard work yourself but the encouragement that comes with belonging to a gym is the thing that kept her going.

“At one point I hit the wall and I couldn’t see the wood from the trees,” said Heather. “They would stop and have a little bit of a chat and say ‘look how far you have come’.”

Heather says she counts calories - what she eats and what she burns - and there’s nothing “gimmicky” about the regime.

She said: “I have done no diet in particular. I have never done well with diets and I have always gained more weight with diets.

“Yes, you lose weight initially but then you go back to eating normally and you gain it all back and probably a bit more.”

Heather is happy to lose 2 to 3lbs a week and believes a steady loss of weight helps to keep it off.

She said: “My actual goal is 6 stone off by Christmas and I’m not far off that - hopefully, if it goes well, I will smash that.”

Heather does almost all of her running in the gym, although she has tried road running in preparation for her half marathon in Peterborough, and has been introduced to interval training as well as lifting weights.

Another achievement came a few days ago when Heather lifted 60kgs, exactly double the weight that she believed was her maximum.

“I went home feeling like a super star,” said Heather.
