Statues of Lincoln Long Wool sheep and Lincoln Red cattle have been installed in Spalding




Statues of sheep and cows are now in place ahead of the grand unveiling this weekend.

Spalding and District Civic Society is celebrating the town’s agricultural heritage by adding the sculptures of Lincoln Red Cattle and Lincoln Long Wool Sheep at two sites in the town as part of its MARK-IT trail.

The statues, which has received a £43,000 grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, are going to be officially unveiled by MP Sir John Hayes during a special event on Saturday at 11am, which will include an artisan market along with creative activities.

Contractors have installed seven sheep sculptures near the benches which sit between The Prior’s Oven and Pied Calf in Sheep Market.

While the Lincoln Red bull and heifer on the pavement outside Longstaff’s in New Road, which was once home to a planter.

A civic society post on Facebook states: “Spalding's history is intertwined with its weekly livestock markets, which once drew farmers and traders from across the region.

“The MARK-IT Trail brings this history to life with sculptures based on the iconic Lincolnshire Long Wool sheep and Lincoln Red cattle—breeds synonymous with the town's agricultural identity.

“The sheep installation includes six white Cadeby Limestone figures, while the New Road cattle sculptures feature a bull and cow, each carved from red sandstone.

“Together, they weigh over 12 tonnes, making for an impressive sight.

“The MARK-IT Trail is led by Spalding & District Civic Society, with support from Transported Arts and South Holland District Council. The sculptures are crafted by acclaimed sculptor Graeme Mitcheson, whose public artworks span the UK—from Caernarfon Castle to Newcastle city centre.”
