Spalding street art ideas and locations revealed
Ideas for new street art designs in Spalding have now been revealed - along with the first locations for a new pilot scheme.
Members of South Holland District Council have vowed to work with a group of artists who have called for street art wall space in the area.
At Tuesday’s Spalding Town Forum meeting, Coun Paul Redgate told members that two locations have been chosen to trial the idea.
These are:
- The green fence to the rear of the swimming pool at the Castle Sports Complex overlooking Westlode Street car park
- The redundant bowls toilet block at the Castle
The idea is that the first pieces of art will tackle two themes - the environment and mental health, particularly issues for men - with a view to updating and changing this for other relevant themes over time.
The council is drawing up a policy on where and how the street art will work, which was then formally agreed by councillors in the policy development panel on Wednesday night. It will now need final sign off by the cabinet in April.
Forum chairman Roger Gambba-Jones praised the fact there is a message to the art, saying: “I think it’s quite exciting as there’s something more serious behind that. I think they’re all great personally.”
However, Coun Christine Lawton was not in favour of the idea. She said: “I think it’s a dreadful, dreadful idea, where do we draw the boundaries?”
She added: “I am an art graduate, I love art. I think this glorifies graffiti and it will be used as an excuse by any number of people.”
The council will gauge feedback on the art on social media and review the policy in six months.
Last year a tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore and pieces at the railway station and Weston Farm Supplies drew widespread praise.
Here are some of the themes and ideas shown to councillors:
