Friends of Johnson Community Hospital, Spalding to hold summer fayre in tribute to late councillor Angela Newton MBE

A summer fayre will be held in tribute to a dedicated councillor in recognition of work in supporting health causes and championing a new community hospital.

Spalding’s Angela Newton MBE was president of the Friends of Johnson Community Hospital before her death in August 2022 — and the group’s next event will celebrate her legacy.

In 2020, for example, the late councillor was instrumental in securing more than £44,000 from the residuary fund of the Pennygate Patient Link to help purchase an ultrasound machine — and this significant acquisition helped the Pinchbeck hospital to be able to deliver cataract operations, sparing patients the need to travel to Boston, Peterborough, or Lincoln.

Steve Weatherly-Barton, chairman of the Friends, said: “Angela led the Friends firmly, inspired by her love for our hospital, and her passionate grasp of the ideals and vision of our National Health Service.”

The summer fayre will be held in the hospital grounds and it is the first the event has been hosted since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Entertainment will be provided by Spalding Community Choir along with stalls, raffle prizes, and a tombola.

Members of Pinchbeck WI will be providing cakes and Nurse Danielle Holton will be offering afternoon tea boxes.

The Spalding Lions will also be in attendance and there will be fun games to play.

Coun Newton had been on South Holland District Council since it was formed in 1974 and was also the first female chairman.

She fought hard for the area's best interests and was also a member of numerous organisations and charities.

These included Spalding in Bloom and South Holland Parish Voluntary Car Scheme and she also served on Lincolnshire County Council.

Funds raised will help the Friends’ commitment to supporting hardworking nursing and ancillary staff and the care of the patients.

The fayre takes place on Saturday, July 13 from 2pm to 4pm at the Johnson Community Hospital in Spalding.
