Spalding area clinical practitioner Wendy Steer shares how Emotional Freedom Techniques can support your wellbeing

EFT is Emotional Freedom Techniques, also commonly referred to as tapping. Now bare with…..this is not just a hippy modality and it is worth reading on I can assure you.

EFT is a form of energy psychology and demonstrates itself as a rapid and effective way to provide relief for a wide variety of issues around a persons sense of well-being. There is growing evidence from studies demonstrating the effectiveness of EFT use for depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, phobias, stress, headaches, sports performance, pain management, to name but a few.

Ongoing research is also showing us that EFT lowers the stress hormone cortisol. High levels of cortisol are associated with things like lowered immune function which impacts on our physical health.

So what does it involve? Simply it is a gentle tapping with the fingertips on specific energy points on the hands, head and chest which correspond to Chinese meridian points; so the same energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture but without the needles! This is done whilst focussing on a specific problem, emotion or memory. This sends an electromagnetic impulse to our brain releasing the emotional charge connected to that memory or problem. The effect of this being it alters our subconscious programming. The memories remain but no longer have a negative influence that it has had on our life and emotions, thus freeing us to make a shift in our perception and thus enabling us to be more positive in our outlook.

People use EFT as a self help tool. So it can be applied in the midst of increased stress situations to self-regulate providing greater calm. When EFT is performed in conjunction with a practitioner a therapeutic relationship is formed to assist the client to work with general or specific issues. Some people use it as an alternative to counselling.

No single intervention works for everyone. However research has shown that 99 per cent of the EFT studies demonstrate not only its effectiveness but also that there are no side effects...so why not try it?
