Sunday footballers are being asked to show they’re doing their own fundraising after asking the parish council to help buy kit.

Sutton St James FC asked for help to buy three match balls, socks, and polos - along with shower and toilet fittings and a wet room floor.

Coun Andrew French wanted to know what the club was doing to raise money.

Vice chairman Coun Henry Neale said: “They are very good cadgers and don’t do anything.”

Coun French said the club had “got their hand out” but he hadn’t seen anything on social media to say they were holding fundraising events like a car boot or a ‘penny for the Guy’.

He said: “I think personally Sutton St James football manager should have been here tonight to put their case forward.”

The council has funded equipment in the past but decided on Thursday to ask the club about how they themselves will “fundraise towards what they want to do”.

The club’s Joe Johnson told us: “I have spoken to the parish council and we are happy working together moving forward.”
