Holbeach hotel gets a new lease of life

A former ‘eyesore’ has been given a fabulous new lease of life in a bid to return it to the ‘hub of Holbeach’.

Jamie Sandford and business partner Robert Bridgewater, who run API Investments, purchased The Chequers Hotel in High Street at the beginning of 2019.

They’ve revamped the building giving it a fresh, clean new look and now the pub/restaurant is available for let. It’s just one of their projects giving a new lease of life to the area’s old buildings.

“Over the last couple of years we have looked to purchase and bring back to life older buildings that have been left derelict and in a state of disrepair,” Mr Sandford, who also own lettings agent Property Panda, explained.

“We obtained planning permission to convert the top two floors into a mix of 15 residential apartments while undertaking full renovation works on the pub to be able to give an opportunity to a new landlord to what was once a thriving family pub, known as ‘the hub of Holbeach’.

“We wanted to involve the local community in some of the decisions and set up a Facebook page where we offered a vote to keeping the external render and then to paint it or whether to take it back to its original brick. With a favourable vote towards the latter option we commenced works on giving the town what they wanted. Locals have been active throughout the project with kind words and encouragement as they have walked past and mostly all positive feedback.”

Last year, the business partners also bought The Bell Hotel, just two doors down from The Chequers and converted that into five self-contained apartments and retail space downstairs.

In Spalding, they purchased the former Lincolnshire Free Press and Spalding Guardian office building in February this year. Adhering to government guidelines they managed to complete a full renovation during the COVID pandemic, creating four apartments and a large office space now occupied by Encore, a recruitment company.

In July, they purchased Adderley House, a former care home in Long Sutton, which they are converting into new apartments.

The Chequers is being marketed by Pepperdine and Freckingham.
