Long Sutton Wombles collects 23 bags of rubbish - and highlights takeaway litter issues

Long Sutton Wombles has held its latest group tidy-up - but remains ‘disappointed’ that history continues to repeat itself.

The group got together once again recently, but frustratingly it’s the same types of litter that is being left.

“We’re still finding things out there,” said Jay Martin, one of the group organisers.

“It’s disappointing the stuff we’re picking up because it’s the same things every time.

“Mostly take away packaging, there’s a lot of that.”

Mr Martin added that fly tipping is also a continual problem faced by the group.

“There’s a lot of fly tipping as well,” he continued.

“It’s frustrating you see it everywhere now.

“A lot of people don’t bother getting rid of things properly these days and just dump it because the chance of being caught is very remote.”

The latest group meet took members from Gedney roundabout into Long Sutton and Winfrey Park.

A total of 23 bags were filled while some fly tipped objects were also removed.

“We went out to keep on top of things,” said Mr Martin,

“It’s the first time we’ve managed to get out for a while.

“The last event was postponed because of the Queen’s funeral.”

The Long Sutton Wombles has approximately 300 members, including what Mr Martin describes as a ‘hardcore group’ of regulars.

Anyone interested in joining is welcome, while the Wombles are also looking for businesses and backers to sponsor them and help cover the costs of hi vis vests, litter pickers and other important clear up tools.

“A lot of people see it as a social thing as well,” Mr Martin said. “Every little helps. Even if it’s just tidying things up down your own street - it helps keep the place looking better.”
