The cheapest – and most expensive – fuel prices in Lincolnshire
Motorists in Lincolnshire are facing a postcode lottery when it comes to filling up – with fuel costing up to 14 pence per litre more at some of the county’s pumps.
An investigation by LincsOnline revealed a huge disparity in prices across the county and surrounding areas.
But, perhaps even more worrying, was the fact that supermarket giants are charging very different amounts for their fuel in neighbouring towns.
It also became apparent that drivers in the north and south of the county are generally paying a lot less for their fuel than residents in central, rural areas such as Spalding and Boston - while it definitely pays to fill up out of town if you’re a Long Sutton resident.
The figures we used show that the cheapest town to purchase petrol was Bourne, where unleaded cost just 138.9 pence per litre, well below this week’s national average of 145.9.

For our data we checked the prices of all pumps within a five-mile radius of the county’s largest towns – which means residents of Market Deeping were in for an even better deal if they crossed into Cambridgeshire to get their fuel from the BP garage at Werrington, where they were paying an eyepoppingly low 136.9.
However, highlighting the huge difference in prices, some motorists were being charged up to 152.9 for unleaded.
For diesel drivers, the best deal available yesterday (Thursday) was in Lincoln and Bourne where filling up cost 146.9, seven pence per litre below the national average of 153.9.
However, the highest price we could find was a staggering 159.9.
“If I drive down the A17 I’m paying a lot less. We’re being overcharged by up to 10p per litre ,” said former motoring journalist Andrew Tipping, who is based in Spalding.
“We’re not getting value here compared to other places.”
There was also a huge disparity in fuel prices in Lincolnshire’s supermarkets.
Tesco were charging sums as low as 138.9 for petrol in Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire and Market Deeping and 146.9 for diesel in Lincoln and Market Deeping - and as high as 145.9 for petrol and 153.9 for diesel, both in Market Rasen.
Morrisons customers could fill up on petrol for a low of 139.9 in Stamford and Scunthorpe and a high of 144.9 in Spalding
Diesel cost 148.7 in Grimsby and Scunthorpe but 153.9 in Spalding.
At the Asda pumps you could get petrol for just 140.7 in Scunthorpe and diesel for 148.7 in Lincoln and Grimsby, in North East Lincolnshire. However, unleaded would cost you 145.7 in both Grantham and Boston and 153.7 for diesel in Grantham.
Fellow supermarket big boy Sainsbury’s was charging 138.9 in Scunthorpe and 140.9 in Grantham for petrol, compared to 145.9 in Spalding. Diesel was priced at 147.9 in Grimsby and Lincoln and 153.9 in Spalding.
Sometimes it pays to fill up on your travels. For example, residents in Long Sutton would pay 148.9 for petrol and 156.9 for diesel on their doorstep.
They would get better deals if they headed off to Holbeach, which itself is not a cheap area for fuel.
Across country lines, prices continue to differ depending on location.
While prices are generally lower than Lincolnshire in Peterborough, that is not the case in Rutland.
The cheapest petrol was available at BP in North Street, Uppingham, costing 144.5 while the cheapest diesel cost 154.9 at Pace in Oakham.
Meanwhile, Newark’s prices were more reasonable than nearby Grantham’s but lower than fellow neighbours Lincoln.
The cheapest petrol and diesel could both be purchased at Asda, costing 141.7 and 151.7 – a 10p per litre difference between the two fuels.
The most expensive fuel our data found was at Midway garage near Sibsey, which was charging 152.9 for petrol and 159.9 for diesel.
