Behind the scenes look at Lawns and Lakes in Fleet

With the soft hum of the A17 before drifting off to sleep and waking up to the sounds of ducks quacking after camping for the night, what better way to spend a couple of days at the Lawns and Lakes camp site in Fleet.

The site is ideal for a visit for those living between the Cambridge, Norfolk and Lincolnshire borders who might like a night under the stars in canvas, taking a motorhome or towing a caravan and not having to travel too far for a break.

Owned and run by Nigel and Tracy Pickett, it is a popular site for fishing with two lakes, a one acre pond and a recently developed 3.5acre lake.

Tracy said: “We encourage people to have a holiday in their own location.”

There is plenty to do with events provided such as stargazing, fish and chip supper, Sunday lunches, car boot sales and a farmer’s market that is host to a number of small businesses.

In the barn there is an extensive food menu with homemade cakes and it is a central meeting point for guests who regularly return to the friendly home from home location.

Entertainment is also arranged with classic car shows, art classes and live bands and all events are also open to the public to book.

The owners are keen to make a strong environmental impact at the site and are members of the David Bellamy conservation foundation.

They encourage new wildlife such as wild bee orchids, turtle doves, woodpeckers and protect the environment with a planting of 20,000 new trees across the site.

There are muntjac, owl boxes, insect hotels, bee hives and bat walks that suit the couple’s aim to “support local schools and put back into the community.”

Fundraising activities support Emma’s Hedgehog Hospital, Terrington St Clement and Waddles Bird Rescue, Holbeach.

Nigel is encouraging visitors to the site to use the Call connect bus service and the 505 bus stops at the camp site and takes passengers via Sutton Bridge, Long Sutton, Holbeach, Weston to Springfields Outlet shopping centre, Spalding.

From there there is a water taxi into the town centre for a walk and wander before going to the bus station and returning to the campsite.

Nigel said: “We really want to support the 505 bus route and it supports the environment too.

“We have a lot to offer in nature and conservation.”

The site is split into pockets of lawns which creates a sense of privacy, space and to ‘experience tranquility and peace.”

Nigel added: “It is a relaxing atmosphere the minute you come through the gate.”

The hosts say the cost of living has affected campsites close by with noticeably fewer reservations being made this summer.

Nigel and Tracy’s aim is to encourage residents in the area to visit for a Friday fish and chip supper, Sunday lunch, entertainment and events and support this gem that a lot of people don’t even realise is there.
