Spalding’s Act II bring critically-acclaimed story The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time to the stage at South Holland Centre
A critically-acclaimed story will be brought to life on the stage this week.
Advanced skills members of Spalding-based ACT II Theatre Company will perform The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Nigh-Time at the South Holland Centre over three shows on Friday and Saturday.
Simon Stephens’ play, based on the seminal novel by Mark Haddon, tells the story of 15-year-old Christopher Boone. He likes space, maths and the colour red.
He notices many small details about the world around him but struggles to understand other people and interpret everyday life.
Christopher stands beside Mrs Shears' dead dog. It has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight, and Christopher is under suspicion.
He must turn detective and begin a great adventure to solve the mystery.
However, in his attempt to solve it, he unlocks more mysteries about his own life.
Upon release this modern classic novel won numerous awards and was very well received.
The play adaptation premiered at the National Theatre and transferred to the West End to critical acclaim.
Act II’s production puts the audience firmly into Christopher’s head, with the whole stage space representing his mind.
Using storytelling techniques and a close actor-audience relationship, a highly visceral and immersive experience is created.
Director Charlotte Gernert said: “This story is packed full – it’s funny, sad, heart-warming, heart-breaking, challenging and emotional.
“Our cast has worked very hard to explore the complexity of the character of Christopher and present him and the world he lives in, in a respectful and open way.
“We are hugely excited and proud to bring this beautiful story to life.’
The much-lauded novel won the Whitbread Book Awards for Best Novel and Book of the Year, the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Book, and the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize.
Meanwhile, the play version secured eight 2013 Laurence Olivier Award nominations and has been performed in more than 15 countries including the UK, USA, Mexico, Japan, Hungary and South Africa.
