Network Rail says there are no plans to electrify Peterborough to Doncaster line which serves Spalding, Sleaford and Lincoln
Rail bosses say there are no plans to electrify a busy route - despite including it within their vision for the county.
The electrification of the Great Northern and Great Eastern (GNGE) line which runs through Spalding had been included within Network Rail’s strategy for the county - which was finally released last year.
On its website, Network Rail says that electrification of lines is better for the environment than the current along with improving the experience for passengers and residents living near the lines.
Lincolnshire County Council has also invested in increasing the height of the Spalding Western Relief Road bridge over the railway line in order to accommodate future electrification of the line. Many locals have now branded this a ‘white elephant’.
Network Rail has already ruled out putting forward any money to help complete the road project - which former councillor Roger Gambba-Jones says was devised to ease traffic misery created by an increase of freight trains - with work on the southern section not due to start until 2030 at the earliest.
A Network Rail spokesman said: “There are currently no plans at the moment to electrify this route. However we continue to work with Department for Transport to identify and build business cases for future electrification.”
Political leaders have previously said that electrification of the line could help to unlock benefits for the county.
