Long Sutton, Lutton and Tydd St Mary to have free garden waste collections

Long Sutton district councillors Jack Tyrrell and David Wilkinson have hired a grab lorry to launch free-to-use garden waste collections.

The pair have pooled council taxpayers' cash from ward budgets to foot the bill for five Saturday collections spread across Long Sutton, Lutton and Tydd St Mary.

If the £1,925 scheme is a success, it could be funded by parish councils from next year.

Coun Wilkinson, who chairs Lutton Parish Council, said: "If the trial is successful Lutton and Tydd parish councils are keen to budget for the service in 2020/21 and I hope that Long Sutton will join with them."

Both men say the service isn't designed to discourage use of district council brown bins, which cost £49 a year for fortnightly collections.

Coun Tyrrell said disposal of garden waste was a big issue when he was canvassing on the doorsteps for the May district council election.

He said: "Nobody has small gardens around here. They cut the hedge and end up with a truckload or trailer load."

Coun Tyrrell said residents are faced with a round-trip to Spalding or Wisbech but not everyone has a car.

He said: "I feel sorry for the older people who have got no way of getting the stuff away."

Coun Wilkinson, who hopes it will discourage some flytipping, said the garden waste will be recycled.

Each collection runs from 9am-midday and the dates are: July 6 (Spring Gardens, Long Sutton), July 27 (Village Green, Lutton); August 24 (Tydd playing field car park), September 28 (Spring Gardens, Long Sutton); October 26 (Village Green, Lutton).

Residents of the three parishes can visit any collection point.
