Student writer Olivia Marshall writes about her ambition to become a journalist
As a young person, it can be daunting when deciding what career path we wish to pursue, writes Olivia Marshall.
Despite having years ahead of us to figure it out, it is hard not to feel the pressure sometimes. Especially when making decisions such as choosing A-level subjects and university degrees.
Following my interest in media creation, I joined journalism societies at my university and quickly realised this is the career that I want to do.
Getting the opportunity to do work experience at Lincolnshire Free Press and Spalding Guardian has confirmed this further.
So, what is it about journalism that really appeals to me as a 19 year old?
Although my school years have come to an end, it doesn’t mean that my thirst to learn finished with them.
Each day you get the opportunity to learn new things about the community and the people who live in it as a journalist.
Whilst it keeps you well-informed, it also means that everyday is different.
Being able to pass on what I have learned so that others can keep in the loop too is a pleasure.
They say “you learn something new everyday”, it certainly feels that way with journalism.
If you’re anything like me, socialising is a necessity.
Some may refer to this phenomenon as being a ‘people-person’ and to that I say: that’s me!
With Covid lockdown restricting the social interaction I had during my younger teenage years, I realised how important it is to me.
I enjoy connecting with people and I am genuinely interested in their stories.
To be able to hear someone’s story and to share it with others is an honour.
If it wasn't for the ventures I have been on as an aspiring journalist, I wouldn't have met the inspiring people that I have.
The pieces of journalism that I have done so far have also enabled me to visit new places.
By pursuing a career in the field, I am hoping for more travel opportunities to open up so I can venture further.
Now, I might be bias here but as an English literature student I love to write.
As you can imagine, journalism is then perfect for a literature student like myself.
Through exploring my interests, I have come to realise the career path which I feel is right for me.
Saying that, I understand that plenty of others are still figuring this out and that is okay.
Here is my advice: finding the career path for you should be a natural process.
You can’t force what you like and what you don’t, so see where your interests and passions take you.
Doing this has led me to want to be a journalist and maybe if these things appeal to you, it might be for you too.
