Revamped Spalding nightclub to welcome DJ, producer and TV presenter Charlie Sloth on May 11

Spalding's new-look XO nightclub is marking its first month with the visit of a top music DJ.

Rap, and hip hop music producer Charlie Sloth is coming to XO, formerly Loaded, in Westlode Street on Saturday, May 11.

Sloth, real name Ian Roullin, made headlines last October when he lost his presenter's role on BBC Radio 1 after a foul-mouthed outburst at a radio industry awards' ceremony.

Matt Clark, director of Activ Leisure which runs XO Spalding, said: "We have the intention of bringing national and international talent to Spalding, including DJs from some of the UK's biggest nightclubs.

"To this end, we have invited ex-BBC Radio 1 and current Apple Music presenter Charlie Sloth to XO Spalding on May 11.

"Charlie is both an iconic and influential artist among the hip hop and rap DJ community, both in clubs and on the airwaves in the UK and USA.

"That is why we are extremely excited about welcoming Charlie to the decks next month, and we have more big names ready to be announced soon, showing commitment to providing varied and high-quality entertainment in Spalding."

XO Spalding opened at the end of March 2019 after a £500,000 makeover which included new carpets, seating, toilets and lighting.

Mr Clark said: "The site has long been overdue the need for investment and after the venue started to take shape, it was clear that a new brand was needed as well.

"Since it opened at the end of March 2019, XO Spalding has enjoyed a huge launch, having hosted capacity nights which included a visit from TV celebrity Pete Wickes of The Only Way Is Essex fame.

"Not an inch of the venue has been left untouched, with its new offering of 11 VIP booths in three areas, plus seating for 20 more in a modern VIP suite.

"Patrons also cannot fail to see and feel the significant investment into professional sound and light systems, with stunning light shows running in time with the powerful bass rhythms.

"During its 14 years, Loaded had always been one of our most successful sites, attracting almost one million customers since it opened.

"However, it was clear that the 'sticky carpet' complaints' in recent years were becoming more noticeable than the quality service and entertainment on offer.

"It was time for a change and although it was a difficult decision to leave Loaded behind, there is literally an entire generation of memories from it at the venue and we are excited about what is ahead of us."

Spalding also has a new gin, craft beer and cocktail bar called The Imaginarium which opened on Saturday, with live music from popular singer-songwriter Meg McPartlin.

Mr Clark said: "Underneath XO Spalding, The Imaginarium promises to bring a mix of Shoreditch, New York City and the city centre to our town.

"The venue has a truly eccentric feel, with hidden door, exposed ceiling, rope swings, Chesterfield sofas and has unique table call system that has to be seen to be believed.

"We just love this new venue because it is a compendium of many bars that I have visited, in many cities and countries, over the years.

"But there are more unique innovations too, with a cocktail menu developed over recent months which offers something for everyone’s taste, a regularly-rotating gin menu and a tempting range of craft beers.

"We are the first to offer this level of service in the town and are already looking forward to seeing many new faces at The Imaginarium."

The new bar is open from 4pm, Thursday to Sunday, with children and dogs allowed until 9pm.
