Spalding Abbey Passage plan questioned by trader and street artist
Questions have been raised about the plans to put artwork in a Spalding alley.
Bridge Street trader Sue Stubley feels that a nearby mural - destined for Abbey Passage - should be put in a more central location for everyone to enjoy.
She said: “It is not going to bring more people down here.
“It is not going to stop them weeing down there - they are going to be aiming at it.
“Why don’t they put something artistic in the Market Place? It needs to be in the town for everyone to see and enjoy.”
Street artist Honr - also known as Karl Barfoot - who is well known for his tribute to Sir Capt Tom Moore - had campaigned with Adam Sadd for a legal wall for artists.
South Holland District Council had devised a street art policy which had been approved last year.
Mr Barfoot, who was not aware of the graffiti, said: “Someone is not happy.
“£30,000 is a high price for that. I would say spray painting that would cost £5,000 to £10,000 for a team of people to do that.”
Mr Barfoot feels that the town is missing out on a legal wall for street artists.
He said: “I would be painting every month. It would change all the time.
“We would get the kids involved and happily teach them about street art and safety.”
Mr Barfoot had created art work on the cost of living crisis on the legal panel at the Castle Sports Complex in Spalding.
But this was removed by the district council which felt that it was ‘outside of what was agreed’.
