Holbeach residents could support a Lincolnshire hospice while also disposing of their Christmas trees

Residents in a South Holland town have the opportunity to support patients and staff at a Lincolnshire hospice while also ethically disposing of their Christmas tree.

Holbeach residents are being urged to 'tree-cycle' to raise vital donations for St Barnabas Hospice, which supports more than 10,000 patients with life limiting or terminal conditions across the county.

The charity will be picking up trees from Saturday, January 11, for a suggested donation of just £10 and these will then be recycled into wood chippings.

A statement on the charity's website says: "Donations are crucial in helping raise the funds to continue caring and supporting people across Lincolnshire that are living with a life-limiting or terminal illness. What you donate is up to you, but we are asking for a suggested donation of £10 per tree.

"The process is simple, make a donation to the hospice and leave your tree outside your home and we’ll do the rest. We collect the trees and take them to one of our supporting chippers to be recycled.

"Tree-cycle is the perfect way to dispose of your Christmas tree in the most environmentally conscious way. Recycled trees are turned into wood chippings that can be used for multiple uses. Wood chippings can be used for biomass boilers, which heat many Lincolnshire homes. They can also provide shelter and layering for farmyard animals and in some cases can be turned into BBQ charcoal which is then sold from local farms."

If you do not live in Holbeach, there are a number of ways in which you could dispose of your tree appropriately.

Members of South Holland District Council's garden waste scheme will be able to have their trees picked up for free when collections resume on Monday, January 20.

If you are not a member, you can sign up by visiting www.sholland.gov.uk/gardenwaste. Alternatively you can dispose of your tree at the local household waste and recycling centre in Spalding's West Marsh Road.
