Memorial tree planted in Spalding in memory of Angela Newton

A memorial tree has been planted to remember and honour the work of a much-loved councillor.

An acer tree was yesterday put into place in ground off The Parkway in Spalding in memory of Angela Newton, who died last August.

Angela’s family joined Coun Stephen Timewell, who took up the Spalding Monks House seat after her death, to attend the ceremony.

Alan Porter, Angela’s husband, helped to plant the tree. He said: “She was a wonder woman.

“She did all of this work in town but was always home at tea time. She never forgot about me.

“In fact, I think she took too much work on but she’s been rewarded for it.”

A plaque, handmade by fellow councillor Chris Brewis, has been installed along with the Japanese maple tree, which was bought using Coun Timewell’s ward budget from Baytree Garden Centre.

Rev Greg Bannister, from St John the Baptist Church in Hawthorn Bank gave a reading followed by prayers.

He said: “Angela was extraordinary but she was, in another sense, just one woman. And yet she made a huge difference to so many lives.”

He added: “When you plant a seed you can’t see it any more, but the plant that results is its legacy.

“We don’t see Angela, but for those who know, her legacy is all around. A tree is therefore a fitting tribute to one extraordinary lady.”

Coun Jane King decided to join the South Holland Independents after being inspired by her cousin Angela’s work.

She said: “It’s a very nice gesture and we understand Angela’s ward had asked for the tree, which is lovely.

“The Independents have also organised their own fitting tribute for Angela in Ayscoughfee Gardens which is being worked on at the moment.”

Angela’s best friend Carol Hudson was also at the ceremony.

The tree has been planted close to a spot where the two friends would share a picnic after campaigning together.

She said: “I miss her very dearly and think about her all of the time.

“I will come and visit the tree to do just that.”

Coun Timewell added: “It’s a burst of colour and it’s nice to be able to remember Angela.

“I will see this every time I drive through the ward and will be reminded of what I’ve got to keep up with.

“It’s lovely that the family are here today and they seem pleased with the tree.”
